This suggested Brittany Holiday tour starts in Rennes, France where fast trains connect to Paris and arrive at the modern Rennes terminus hourly.
Day 1/
Your day starts by making your way to Rennes modern Montparnasse train station, where TGV fast trains arrive regularly. EuropeDriving.com will be on the platform awaiting your arrival including pre-arrival communications.
After settling in the car ‘we drive you’ via Canal d’ille-et-Rance. Stopping to admire and wander the St. Piere de Rennes Cathedral and a coffee on Pl. de Bretagne.
Leaving Rennes we travel through rolling landscape on the D776 past open fields, villages and see the greener France. Our destination via the D248 and D14 brings us to our base for your 10 day personalized ‘We drive You’ holiday: –
Destination being Chateau Le Mur. Here we settle in, drinks on the Patio over looking the Carentoir Valley, hear the stories of the Castle’s history because of its interesting past.
Day 2/
After the previous days long journeys to day is set in the local region. Here’s a Thing, we take a drive through Carentoir and arrive in La Gacilly a unique and active old town set on the banks of the La Aff River.
The river has a lovely flower decorated weir and bridge at the point the river turns to being navigable by barge boats.
We visit the many shops throughout the town during the annual photo Exposition. The La Gacilly Expo which is unusual as photo’s cover most external building surfaces which are adorned with large fixed photographs of the years theme.
A light lunch after which we return to Le Mur where we can walk some of the old Roman chariot roads that are still intact around this 187 acre property.
This evening we return to La Gacilly where we suggest you try a stylish evening meal at Maison Yves Rocher restaraunt before calling it a day.
Day 3/
We drive out of the kilometre driveway of Le Mur and make our way through forests and open farm land via Saint Martin to Rochefort-en-Terre a quaint hill top town.
The castle has it’s own castellated walls, cobble streets and quaint restaurants. Here’ a Thing, we visit the town center where the smell, only a faint whiff of; cooking crepes which are regularly eaten by the many international visitors to the region. A walk to the castle top, wander the shops including the Chocolaterie and parts of interest before you settle for lunch at the recommended La Tour Du Lion.
Leaving Rochefort we drive via Pleucadeuc on to Malestroit a town nestled on the banks of the L’Oust River. During summer months barges arrive from both up and down river as this small town offers good restaurants, activity and sets a medieval theme. We visit the canal banks wander the town with its amazing architecture before you settle for an early diner before we return to Le Mur.
Day 4/
Today our activity will be driving to the medieval town of Josselin. The impressive Josselin Castle hugs the sheer cliff face on the L’Oust canal. We have the opportunity to visit the town enjoying a lunch overlooking the river of town square. Thereafter we wander the Castle grounds and gain a view from the upper battlement at any passing foe below.
On returning to Le Mur its a choice of home cooked meal or a short drive to La Gacilly were fine restaurants awaits you concluding the day.
Day 5/
The old coastal city Saint Malo is today’s adventure where we arrive at the old walled gates of the city which is surrounded by sea or new marina’s. We visit an old French frigate of the line well decorated in its black and gold.
The town is totally walled which offers you the walk around the city perimeter giving a view of the town and its naval attraction.
The city is known as it was used for the King’s Pirates of old, known as Privateers. There are numerous restaurants, and bouquet shops around each corner, the colourful town has museums many historical sights to take in.
After an active day we return to Le Mur for a restful evening.
Day 6/
Here’s a Thing, to day has a little less driving as we visit the town of Pontivy and the villages in between.
Pontivy is set on the tranquil Blavet River with its majestic barrel shaped bridge casting reflections on the waters below.
We visit the town center and find out how this city acquired its name. Walk the tall tree lined avenue in the city and see the impressive Chateau des Rohan.
We suggest lunch, sitting on the restaurant deck over looking the river and its slow moving traffic. We return to Le Mur through the picturess town of Ploermel where a coffee break may be warranted.
Day 7/
With the coast on our minds we travel East across open country to the beautiful city of Vannes set on the Atlantic Ocean and at the end of a harbored inlet.
We park on the outside of the castigated city walls where the approach gardens are a mass of coloured flowers. A winding babbling brook runs through the gardens, offering a tranquil place to take time.
We enter the city through the customary tower gates and once again finding a town set-out in Medieval tradition.
Vannes offers a large market, sprawling the length of the city’s main street, unique and inviting shops, Patisseries, Boulangerie’s and a large selection of restaurants. Having walked through the town we exit the East tower gates because there, explodes the view of Vannes harbour marina with well set restaurants overlooking this spectacular view of colour.
Day 8/
With the sun out we drive via Rennes and Fougeres arriving at Mont Saint-Michel for the day.
This internationally recognizable land mark is a pleasure to take in.
The busseling narrow cobble streets, cafe’s, restaurants and boutique shops. The architecture of the medieval buildings and the masonry work are all worth of your camera.
Due to it’s seaward location, we park the car and either catch the ferry bus to the main entry or take the 45 minutes to walk the causeway from main land to the island mound. Here too at St-Michel the city walls are walk-able, the Abbaye, galleries, museums are well worth viewing as you follow the city’s history trail. A lunch at the world famous la sirene lochet creperia should be included if possible.
Day 9/
Heading further South we travel via Redon. A town that has a crossroad of canals, with adjoining locks where you are able to see the canal barges at work, we later reach La Baule-Escoublac set on the Atlantic coast.
With it’s curved and flat sandy beach which offers views to distant islands La Baule offers numerous beach activities.
The long expanse of this beach where every 400mtrs there is another beach located cafe’ giving you the option to soak up the sun in style. The town offers superb hotels and an active class casino.
At one end of the beach we reach the Port Baule-Le-Pouliguen which is the opening to the inland waterways. During summer this harbour undertakes numerous water borne activities.
La Baule is well positioned to the city of Saint Nazaire , well renown for the WW2 submarine pens that are still viewable. A museum covering this period of time is well worth a visit. We return back to Le Mur for drinks on the Patio.
Day 10/
The last day, time has passed quickly with your short but active personal holiday to Brittany. Today we pack the car for your return trip and drive into La Gacilly for a special lunch at the Yves Rocher Maison restaurant. Following a short re visit of the town we drive East to the city of Rennes.
Here’s a Thing, we pass the Canal d’ille-et-Rance once more, arriving at our destination of Rennes modern Montparnasse train station for your departure. EuropeDriving.com will accompany you to your reserved train carriage and bid you farewell until your next adventure.
