Great Locations, Cars and People.

History. Julius Caesar conquered Paris in 52 B.C. It was then a fishing village, called Lutetia Parisiorum (the Parisii were a Gallic tribe), on the Île de la Cité. Under the Romans the town spread to the left bank and acquired considerable importance under the later emperors.

In 987, HUGH CAPET, Count of Paris, became king, under his successors, the CAPETIANS, the city’s position as the nation’s capital became established. Often characterized as spirited and rebellious, the people of Paris first declared themselves an independent commune in 1355-58.

The storming of the Bastille in 1789 was the first of a series of key actions by the Parisian people during the FRENCH REVOLUTION. Paris also played a major role in the revolutions of 1830 and 1848. In 1871, during the FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR, the city was besieged for four months until France surrendered. After German troops withdrew, French radicals briefly established the COMMUNE OF PARIS. During World War I the Germans were prevented from reaching Paris, but they occupied the city during World War II from 1940 to 1944. Paris was again the scene of violence during the student riots of 1968.

ENGLISH COUNTRY GARDENS

 Personal Garden Visits

Europe Driving Holidays will take you in style to a selection of English Country gardens where the beauty, colour and garden arrangements can be soaked up with joy while tea and scones are served under the Elm tree.

An interesting article highlights the interest and direction we can take while you explore those unique locations out of reach of those in group tours, all highlighten in ‘Secret Gardens of the Cotswolds’ reviewed recently by Sarah Feeley.

‘Pleasingly, by contrast, this book has a real ‘insider’ feel, so the book is very personal, a love letter of sorts. Discussing numerous Cotswolds gardens designed by some of the world’s best designers, revealing their charm, romance, horticulture and history by those who lovingly tend them. Some are open to visitors, others remain strictly private. The book gives a full guided tour from gate to gate.

From the snowdrop fields in Colesbourne to The Persian Garden at Sezincote, the elegant parterres of Bourton House in Bourton on the Hill and the majestic yew topiary at Ablington Manor, this enchanting book depicts paradise found.’

England and its many natural and heritage gardens is a must for those with an eye of a keen gardener wishing to have that memorable experience. There is enough garden romance and storytelling in each garden to make your trip flow beautifully, while on your personalised holiday with Europe Driving.
